The Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull creature, was born from Queen Pasiphae of Crete after a curse from Poseidon made her fall in love with a divine bull. King Minos, her husband, imprisoned the creature in the Labyrinth, a maze designed by the inventor Daedalus.
As punishment for killing Minos' son, Athens was forced to send seven youths and seven maidens as sacrifices to the Minotaur every year. The hero Theseus volunteered to end the terror. With help from Minos’ daughter, Ariadne, who gave him a thread to navigate the maze, Theseus killed the Minotaur and escaped, freeing Athens from its grim tribute.
