Trump's Plan to Tariff "Made In China"
After a lengthy presidential campaign, Trump focused on starting a trade war with China, promising to impose tariffs on Chinese products. His aim was to reduce the U.S. trade deficit with China and foster domestic industry.
Despite tariffs, China continued to grow economically, aided by its “Made in China 2025” plan, which aimed to position China as a technological leader in areas like AI and robotics. Trump’s policies targeted key technologies, particularly restricting exports to Chinese companies like Huawei.
However, China diversified its markets, maintaining growth despite the U.S. tariffs. By 2023, China made significant technological advances, closing the gap with the U.S. in key sectors. As Trump prepares for a second term, he has promised to escalate the trade war, including higher tariffs on Chinese cars.
However, China’s growing self-sufficiency and adaptability pose a challenge to U.S. policies, making future relations between the two countries complex and uncertain.
