Tom Hanks turned down $40 million

During the making of Forrest Gump, the studio started pulling money from critical scenes — including the now-iconic sequence where Forrest runs across the entire country.
Producers thought it was too expensive and unnecessary. But Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis disagreed. They believed the heart of the story would be lost without it.
So what did they do? They paid for it themselves. Hanks actually used his own money to keep the vision alive.
In exchange, he gave up his fixed salary and made a daring decision — to earn only if the movie succeeded, by taking a share of its profits.
It was a massive risk. But Forrest Gump became a cultural phenomenon, winning 6 Oscars and grossing over $680 million.
That “sacrifice” made Hanks over $60 million — and turned him into one of the smartest negotiators in Hollywood history.
