The process of making hina dolls, a charm against bad luck used for 1,300 years

Kato Ningyo specializes in producing the bodies and costumes of Hina dolls, which are loved by many Japanese families.
We will show you the production process of these handmade dolls.

▼ Hina Dolls
Hina dolls are decorated to protect children from injury or illness and to pray for a happy family in the future.
Currently, dolls are usually displayed on March 3 to pray for the health of girls, but in the past, dolls were used to pray for a safe delivery and were burned as a sign of gratitude after a child was born safely.
This custom still remains in some parts of Japan today.
Hina dolls vary from region to region, and the dolls made by Kato Dolls are classified as “Nagoya Sekku Ornaments,” a type of craftwork.

Kato Doll is located in Moriyama-ku, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture.
Here, Takaaki Kato, a traditional craftsman, and his wife Mayumi make the bodies and costumes of Hina dolls.
In addition to making Hina dolls, they are involved in various activities as craftsmen, such as workshops and lectures at universities.
Kato dolls are certified as Nagoya Setsukku decorations, which are a combination of three crafts: hina dolls, snow globes (bonbori) and carp streamers (koinobori).
