I composed this tune for Ed Claxton, a great luthier from Santa Cruz, CA, inspired by a new guitar he built. Some years ago, Ed asked if I'd like to check out a new model he'd designed, a tiny O-sized parlor guitar. It was stunning, with a voice much bigger than its size, and even came with an amazing hand-built wooden coffin case. Ed lent it to me for a week or so, during which I was inspired to compose a new tune on the guitar. Ed named the new model the "Composer". As far as I know, Ed has only built a few of these.
When I shared the new tune with Ed, he suggested the title of "Sea Gypsy" which was the name of a boat he worked on at one point in his life. You can hear the original recording, played on the Composer model, on Ed's website. Other than that, I never recorded or released the tune, until now.
For this recording, not having a Composer model available, I recorded the tune on my 13 fret Claxton Malabar, also a fairly small guitar, about OO 1/2 size. The recording was done with a pair of Schoeps CMC6/MK41 mics. A studio recording is also now available on Spotify, Apple Music, etc:
