A college uses AI to announce students’ names during graduation

Some colleges in the US are now using AI to announce students’ names at graduation.

Instead of a person reading names, an AI voice takes over after students scan their phones.

PACE University was one of the first to do this. Before the ceremony, students typed out the phonetic spelling of their names on a website. The system used AI to instantly generate an audio clip, and students could tweak it if the pronunciation was off.

At the ceremony, it was quick and smooth: scan your phone, and the AI says your name as you walk the stage. No live announcer. No human recording. Fully automated.

Some students liked it. It was fast, and their names were pronounced right. But others felt weird about it. One said it gave them “the ick.” Another called it odd to hear a robot say their name during such a personal moment.

PACE confirmed it was all AI. The goal was efficiency, but for some, it came at the cost of meaning.
