'Very disturbing': 6-year-old dead for multiple days after 2-week absence from school

A mother is in custody after her 6-year-old son was found dead in their Fort Pierce home.

At 10 a.m. on Friday, deputies with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office (SLCSO) say they conducted a welfare check at a home on the 2500 block of Bedford Drive in Fort Pierce after receiving a tip from a school resource officer. The resource officer reportedly told deputies that the 6-year-old had been absent from his school, Samuel Gaines Academy, since May 14.
