On December 17, 1928, Bhagat Singh assassinated John P. Saunders.
But now, Bhagat Singh needed to find a way to escape and hide from the British.
For this, he sought the help of Durgavati Devi on December 19, 1928.
Durgavati Devi is one of India’s most respected female freedom fighters. During British rule, her home became a safe haven for many freedom fighters.
Bhagat Singh's plan was to board a train from Lahore to Kolkata.
He had already changed his appearance. He shaved his beard, cut his hair short, and dressed in Western-style clothing.
Meanwhile, Durgavati Devi played the role of Bhagat Singh’s wife.
At the station, Bhagat Singh bought two first-class tickets for himself and Durgavati Devi and a third-class ticket for his companion, Shivaram Rajguru.
On the way, they even changed trains at one point to avoid suspicion from the police.
Durgavati Devi traveled with Bhagat Singh all the way to Kolkata.
A few days later, she returned to Lahore, and this escape mission was completely successful.
