Copycat BMWs Started a Design Problem

In the late 1990s and early 2000s there was a famous phrase being uttered about many in Germany about BMW: eine Wurst, drei Größen. Translated to English, that's "one sausage, three sizes." It meant all of their cars began to look too similar. Although beautifully designed, compared to their rival, Mercedes-Benz, this confused consumers, and it led them to design the 7 Series with the so-called Bangle Butt, a car that may have been the beginning of the end.
