This is part 1 of the techniques for fitting or calibrating the infectious disease models (COVID-19 type diseases). This video introduces the calibration approaches, and primarily focusses on the various studies that have been conducted to estimate the UK social contact matrix, which can be viewed as a proxy for WAIFM (Who Acquires Infection From Whom), and can be used to infer the Next Generation Matrix (NGM). The dominant Eigenvalue of this matrix, as we already know, will then be R0 (assuming certain conditions are satisfied), and the Eigenvector associated with this Eigenvalue is then the stable distribution of infectives. The studies introduced in this video include the European POLYMOD study, and the BBC pandemic project that was conducted for the documentary Contagion.
