Why doesn´t the gun hit the propeller?

In this video I will show you a very old and nearly forgotten mechanism, which was very important for piston powered warplanes: the synchronized machine gun.

During World War One the first aircrafts were used in war. First they were used for enlightenment, but the Pilots started fighting each other, so the aircrafts needed weapons. The engineers found out soon, that the best place for the machine gun is in front of the pilot, because it is easier to aim and the pilot could reload the weapon and remedied escapements. But the problem was that the machine gun is behind the propeller circuit, so the gun would hit the propeller blades, which would have destroyed it, because they were made out of wood. French engineers just fixed steel sheet on the propellers. Because light and soft bullets were used for French machine guns, it worked, but the Germans used much heavier and stronger ammunition, which would have punch through the steel sheet. The solution was to use a mechanism that synchronized the machine gun with the propeller.

And in my video I will show you an example of one of these synchronization gears. I also created an own machine gun design, because no existing design doesn´t works well for this project. I am sure, this machine gun is also interesting for other projects, like a tank, a turret, or anything else.

I hope, you like this unlike topic, please tell me in the comments
