I purchased the Tomytec North American bus I got through Walther's along with 2 additional right hand bus stops.
I laid out the track, got it working the way I wanted, then marked out its outline on the 2 inch foam board.
I used a box cutter to cut into the top layer of paint and foam. After a little trial and error, I found the best way was to trim off the very top of the foam, not digging too deep. Then I could make a smooth removal of the foam using a Stanley wood shaver. The width was almost perfect (just a bit wide).
I went back where I gouged too much out at first and filled in with some thin lightweight hydrocal.
I had planned to remove the stop/go mechanism you see at each bus stop, and cut off the magnets that operate the bus and glue them to the proper positions under the track. Then I looked again at it and figured if I just buried the mechanism, I wouldn't have to worry about screwing up the magnet placement, and the stop/go mechanism will disappear into the scenery. Then at some later date, I could still resell it, if need be.
The road is smooth enough with the foam top, any side of the road you see is just because I cut too wide. Easy enough to fill in.
Ran the bus over the completed surface and it runs without any issues (knock on wood). I have 3 bus stops on the route, 2 in downtown and 1 at the passenger station.
Happy with the results. Going to really like it when the town is filled in.
