I finally figured out what I had been doing wrong** and got so excited that I ran in to get the waterproof camera. I sank it to the bottom of the pool. Luckily I had the foresight to tie it to a rope because it took 3 tries to get it to land right. (I trimmed that part out for you.) Pardon the framing, I had no control over that as I was both the cameraman and the victim.
** I've seen in roll training videos that you need to keep your eyes on your paddle blade until you come up. The first time I landed a good roll it was after dark and I had the LED pool lights on. My paddle is slightly UV reactive (AWESOME!) so the glow naturally catches the eye. I watched it throughout the roll out of curiosity. The moment I landed the roll I remembered that point from the videos and realized what I had been missing. If I hadn't persevered late into the evening it probably would have taken me months.
