Long ago, two asuras, Madhu and Kaitabha stole the Vedas from Brahma. Without the Vedas, the world was covered in darkness and ignorance, and Brahma could not continue creating the universe.
Brahma prayed to Vishnu for help. Vishnu in his Narayana form fought with the two asuras and tricked them into giving up their life. However, the asuras set a condition that they can only be killed where there is no water. Since Earth was filled with water at that time, the asuras thought they were safe.
But Vishnu took the form of Hayagriva, a powerful being with the head of a horse. He placed the asuras on his thigh and killed them and saved the Vedas. Hence Hayagriva is worshipped even today as the god of wisdom and learning.
