Blind Mary is a tune attributed to the Irish Harper, Turlough O'Carolan (1670 - 1738). Like many of O'Carolan's tunes, there is some mystery about the tune, and even some question of whether it is really one of his compositions. He may have written it for another harper, Maire Dhall (Blind Mary).
This version, for solo guitar in Drop-D tuning, is based on the arrangement that I teach in my Peghead Nation course on Alternate Tunings, (and also in my book, Alternate Tunings for Fingerstyle Guitar) tho it has evolved a bit over time, and I don't play it exactly the same each time.
This recording was also an experiment to see if I could use the AEA R88 stereo ribbon mic for a video. It's a bit large, making it a bit more challenging to set up cameras without being totally hidden behind the mic! Being a stereo figure-8 mic also adds more of the room sound to the recording, potentially an issue since my video space isn't acoustically treated very well,. But it ended up sounding ok, I think. The mic was plugged directly into a Sound Devices Mix-Pre recorder.
Played on my Ed Claxton 13 fret Malabar.
