How To Automatically Enter Serial Number If a Cell Has Value?

In this tutorial I’ll explain the easiest and accurate approach to add row number and skip blanks. My other approaches required value and if there were blank cells it couldn’t calculate the serial number properly. But in this tutorial, I’ll overcome that problem. From now on we’ll be able to add serial number in excel with blank rows.
To create auto serial number, you need to use the below formula. Here in this scenario, I want the serial number from cell A2 and we’ll add the serial number depending on column B and the counting will start from cell B2. Now copy the below formula in cell A2 and enter data in column B starting from cell B2. It will give you a tremendous result.

Now in the formula I’ve fixed the cell B2 with absolute reference so that it will always enter serial number starting from B2 and the reference doesn’t change if you drag or autofill the formula. This is how we fill cell with serial number in excel if the adjacent cell is not empty.
