Peek inside House of Zen — Transforming an Old Bali Home into a Dreamy Family Retreat in Sayan Ubud

Eszter and Andras are an award-winning documentary filmmaker couple who have filmed with Pope Francis, the Dalai Lama and produced over 90 documentaries for international broadcasters. With a deep respect for the land and a love of craft, they chose to renovate an existing home rather than build from scratch, preserving the trees, rice fields, and surrounding ecosystem. The result? A character-rich home that feels rooted, intentional, and creatively alive.

From antique Dutch colonial pieces to a handmade snake-themed mirror, House of Zen is full of meaningful design stories. The curved staircase is a sculptural centerpiece, while the copper bathtub on the master balcony offers stargazing among the treetops.

• Light-filled living space with metal-beamed ceilings covered in bamboo
• Antique treasures from Java and personalized lamps from Hungary
• Locally made volcanic stone tiles perfect for family living
• Moody, mosaic-tiled shower with custom mirrors and dark finishes
• Elevated master bedroom with volcano views and built-in chill-out lounge
• Balcony copper bathtub nestled in nature
• Open-air corridors with cut-outs for natural light
• Indian-inspired brickwork in the pool area that blends art and function
• Bold tile colour choices and raw finishes that tell a story

This home is a heartfelt collaboration with local artisans—honouring both Bali's culture and the couple’s creative vision. More than a home, it’s their love letter to design and sustainable living.
