The Mythological Story of Sagittarius ♐ | Greek Mythology Explained

The fruit of forbidden love and the bitter price of immortality… One night, Kronos, disguised as a horse and without the knowledge of his wife, Rhea, secretly meets Philyra, a water nymph with whom he has fallen in love. From this union, Chiron is born—a centaur who is immortal and half-human, half-horse. However, he is abandoned by his mother due to his appearance. Raised by Apollo, Chiron excels in music, astrology, and prophecy, and goes on to teach legendary heroes. One day, while visiting Pholus with Heracles, they are attacked by other centaurs. In the chaos, Chiron is unintentionally struck by one of Heracles’ poisoned arrows. Though he survives due to his immortality, he is left with an unbearable and unending pain. Chiron begs Zeus in desperation to end his suffering. Zeus agrees, but only if Chiron is willing to renounce his immortality and exchange his fate with another. Chiron sacrifices himself to end the suffering of Prometheus, who brought fire and wisdom to mankind but was condemned to eternal punishment for it. Zeus rewarded Chiron's sacrifice by giving him an eternal place among the stars as the constellation Sagittarius.
