Salvaging a 35yr old Honda cr250 plastic gas tank that must have been left in the elements for years on years.
items needed to clean, wet sand and polish are as follows:
-a plastic bottle to apply water as you wet sand to keep sandpaper fresh and protect plastic from burning.
-sanding and buffing kit 3'' diameter with drill adapter hook and loop
grit sizes - 3'' disks
-500
-800
-1500
-2000
-3000
-rubbing compound - I prefer is 3m seems to be the best in my experience.
-clean towel - to dry tank between stages of wet sanding to insure quality of plastic is good enough to polish at end.
**between 500-800 grit you want to inspect how much material is cutting off with sandpaper in water it should stop cutting yellowish white plastic and stop producing cutting if through unusable plastic and to polishable plastic surface**
Then step up wet sanding grit starting with 500-800-1500-2000-3000 as you go along through stages dry tank and make sure you remove the swirls from each previous grits to get to a sooth finish and after dry rubbing compound stage you should have a shiny glass like polishing effect
The same process is used to repair front and rear fenders, side panels, number plates and radiator shrouds.
