May 23, 1995 saw the launch of not just a new programming language and an entire development and deployment platform, but also the beginnings of the largest developer community on the planet. Initially targeted at the brand-new world of browsers and the World Wide Web, it quickly became the de facto standard for enterprise-grade applications designed to be highly performant, scalable, and secure. Thirty years later, Java remains a leading technology that powers the world. How did this happen? Let's take a whirlwind tour of Java’s history, recalling many of the milestones along the way and highlighting how the Java community played and continues to play an important role in ensuring the language stays vibrant for the next thirty years and beyond.
