Spooky Payne makes his first appearance as I spend some time in the World of Horror, a Love Letter to Juni Ito.
We can’t dive into World of Horror without first talking about it’s primary inspiration, the works of Junji Ito.
Junji Ito is like the Stephen King of spooky comics, but instead of haunted hotels, he crafts nightmares fuelled by body horror and cosmic dread. Think "The Ring" on acid, mixed with Lovecraftian whispers and a sprinkle of Japanese folklore.
Themes include – severed limbs sprouting faces, hair that comes alive, and towns obsessed with spirals. But if you like your chills creepy and original, Junji Ito's your man. He's won awards, inspired movies, and terrified millions.
"Uzumaki" and "Tomie" are great jumping-off points, with both manga and anime available. I strongly suggest you start with the original manga series first, Junji is the master of the “page turn” which is the closest thing to a jump scare in book form.
Anyway, let’s take a quick dive into the World of Horror by Pavel Koźmiński.
