Well fellas the 6.2L V8 L87 Engine from GM is officially getting recalled for bottom end issues - a very sad day because I actually thoroughly enjoyed driving this engine but with the valvetrain issues and now the potential bottom end problems it makes it hard to want to own one of the these engines.
the Safety Recall N252494001 L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion consists of two possible outcomes for owners at this point. the engine gets inspected and if there is a P0016 code present which means the ECU has detected the crankshaft and camshaft are out of sync then the engine is going to be replaced.
if that code is not present the engine will simply get an oil change updating the oil to a thicker 0w40 engine oil with a new filter and i guess GM thinks the thicker weight oil is going to provide more protection to the bottom end helping to extend the life of the engine.
I personally feel like this not a full solution rather some patch work to hopefully extend the life of the engine. I also mention how the cylinder deactication technology or dynamic fuel managment runs on engine oil pressure and will this thicker engine oil have an impact on the hydraulic valve train - who knows.
