USA: MARK CHAPMAN DENIED PAROLE UPDATE

(3 Oct 2000) English/Nat
XFA
A parole board has decided the immediate fate of Mark David Chapman - he will remain in prison for at least the next two years.

The man who murdered ex-Beatle John Lennon has already served nearly 20 years in Attica prison in New York, but the board had to take into consideration his good behavior during time served.

On Tuesday afternoon fans gathered to pay respect to Lennon, to leave flowers and mementos in memory of the late musician.

Those milling about the memorial were united in their decision that the Board did the right thing to deny Chapman parole.

Many said that they felt Chapman deserved no consideration for parole whatsoever.

"Obviously he murdered John Lennon in cold blood. There was no reason for it. And he should just be kept locked away forever. That's that, till he dies."
