See just how dangerous leaving a child in a hot car can be and learn what you can do to prevent your child from being left unattended in a hot car. Chesrown Chevrolet Buick GMC and Delaware General Health District got together to find out just how hot a car can get in the dead of summer.

Hi I'm Jackie Bain with the Delaware General Health District. It's easy for us to say that we would never forget to check the back seat and get a child out before leaving our vehicle.

But it happens.

Caregivers get in a hurry, they get distracted or simply miscommunicate about whose responsibility it is to get the child out.

Children who are sleeping in the backseat can be very quiet and can be overlooked by even the very best of parents.

That's why we're here today at Chesrown Chevrolet Buick GMC to take a look at just how hot it gets in a car that's sitting on a hot day like today. Glenn?

As you can see, the temperature outside is 87 degrees and climbing, but inside this 2015 GMC Yukon Denali, the temperature is a dangerous 110.8 degrees Fahrenheit.

A child's body warms up 3-5x faster than an adult's. So what does that mean inside the car? Let's find out.

To contextualize heat like that, we placed s'more supplies inside the Yukon just prior to recording. The result? Total meltdown.

Remember that children's bodies heat up 3-5x faster than an adult's. At a core temperature of 107 degrees, brain cells are damaged and internal organs shut down.

Leaving the windows open a crack does not help.

If you put something in the backseat - like a cell phone, briefcase or purse - you'll be reminded that there's a child with you, even if they're quiet or sleeping.

Agree to have your child's care provider or teacher call you immediately if your child does not show up for care or school when expected.

Always lock your car. Make sure children do not have access to your keys.

And remember to have a safe summer. Never leave a child in a hot car.
