Using Automation to Improve Profitability

Ken Beck, President, Tessy Lynchburg: We started in 1972. My father, Henry Beck, started the Tessy Plastics injection molding business. A good portion of our business is medical, consumer products and high volume medical and disposable medical. I think that the partnership with IQMS has been excellent. We have become paperless through that, and it’s one step in our continuous improvement. On the production floor, we’re continually improving with automation, new molding machines, and IQMS fell right in line with that.

Doug Jobe, Director of Operations: One of the best things about IQMS is the data, but somebody has to see the data. As soon as you can see the data, then you can make a decision. We decided that tablets were a great way. Instead of having a paper production folder that never changes, we were able to create an electronic podium that does change. It’s instant. Everybody out there has access to IQMS. They can see that data. We just took from there the next step, “where else can we put it?” So we wanted to create information centers, so we do have information centers throughout the plant that anybody can look at and use, and see how well we’re performing for that day. We look at automation as a huge group. Not only does that include molding machines that are capable, it includes robots that are capable, and it includes software that is capable. What we’ve been able to do with IQMS is combine all of those things into systems that work.

Beverly Burford, Administrator of Quality: Customers, when they audit us, they are outside auditors, where AS9100 Certification… they are just amazed at what we pull up in IQMS. I can’t imagine going back from not using it, because I was here before we had it. It’s made it a lot simpler and, in a lot of ways, a lot more sophisticated. It’s really helpful when you have a customer who calls and has a concern about something. Everything is in there and you can track it all the way through there. It’s a lot, there’s so much information there, it’s unreal.

Dayna Gale, Administrator of Operations: I use IQMS from beginning to end; from the Quoting Module, to the Systems Setup, Manufacturing, Shift Reporting, Quality. Basically I touch every module, and if others here at Tessy have a question, they usually come to me. If I don’t know the answer, I get in contact with IQMS Technical Support and we figure it out together.

Ken Beck, President, Tessy Lynchburg: We certainly think, we know that IQMS has improved profitability for us. It’s a lot less people, it’s a lot less man hours to get us the information that we need and, in the end, gets us good product out the door.
