More About This Video:
Today we’re diving into how to mod Cities Skylines with the Steam Workshop. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to add mods to Cities Skylines, how to manage your Cities Skylines mods, and how to full remove mods from Cities Skylines.
To start adding mods to Cities Skylines, we’ll need to head over to the Steam workshop. For me, personally, I find it easiest to use a browser like Chrome or Edge to search for Cities Skylines mods. This is mainly because a lot of mods for Cities Skylines require a dependency to work correctly, meaning you’ll often be opening multiple tabs when searching for mods to install in Cities.
To make this easier, I’ve created a redirect to the Cities Skylines Steam Workshop. This will take you DIRECTLY to the Steam Workshop for Cities Skylines where you can search and subscribe to mods for your game.
Once you have searched for a mod to add to Cities Skylines, you’ll then need to make sure if there are any other required items for the mod to work properly. In this video on how to get mods for Cities Skylines, we’ll go over what mod dependencies are in Cities as well as how to install the mod dependencies. Harmony for Cities is one of the most popular mod dependencies, meaning it will work with a large amount of mods that use it. Once you have subscribed to it, you will not need to resubscribe for every mod that requires it.
Once you have subscribed to the Cities Skylines mod as well as the dependency (if required), you’ll then be able to head back to your Steam library and launch the Cities Skylines game. When the CS launcher opens, be sure not to hit resume. We need to load directly into the main menu because (unlike assets), mods do not automatically activate. We will need to activate the mods manually for them to appear in the Cities Skylines game.
Once the Cities Skylines main menu has launched, head over the Content Manager and click on “Mods” in the left-hand sidebar. Because this tutorial is all about how to get mods for Cities Skylines, we’ll be heading to the Mods section of the content manager.
From here, the easiest way to see your most recently installed mods for Cities Skylines is to go to Sort By: Enabled and Order: Descending. This will show all the mods not enabled at the top so that you can quickly enable your latest downloaded mods. You can also use the search feature in the Cities Skylines Content Manager to find your new mods.
You will need to enable the mods AS WELL AS any required dependencies, such as Harmony. Once you have enabled the mod and all required items, we can close out of the Content Manager and load into our Cities Skylines game. From here, you’ll be able to see your newly installed mods loaded directly into your game.
Keep in mind, when game updates are released, major mods often break. This is normal with updates, so please be prepared. To remove a broken mod, you will need to load into the Cities Skylines Content Manager and search for the broken mod. From there, deactivate the mod by making sure the box underneath the name is grey instead of blue. From there, you can click on the Steam Workshop icon and Unsubscribe from the mod.
If you do not fully unsubscribe from the mod, it will still load parts of the mod, even if it is not enabled. If a mod is broken, you must remove it fully from your game by using this method.
