2001 - one evening I met Manfred Bodner, Co-CEO of then BETandWIN (later BWIN) and he shared over a drink:
"I want to have live betting online but the IT guys are telling me they can't do it - no reliable technology to update the odds real-time." - remember this was 2001, no websocket and no way to update html elements without refreshing the whole page.
"Of course it can be done" I responded, "and I'll use a technology as old as the internet". And we went back to the office to design the first online live betting product. I was new to the industry, and never engaged in sports betting in my life. Three months later, after I developed it together with one backend developer, it went online and it kinda became a big deal - it positioned the company in a leading position, got copied countless times and became the industry standard for live/in-play betting.
