Comparing spaced repetition algorithms (Anki vs Brainscape)

Looking for a steady stream of tips and tricks on studying, productivity, and personal habit development? Subscribe and ring the bell, and we’ll notify you when Brainscape drops a new video. You'll find our in-depth study (and teaching) guides at www.brainscape.com/academy/.

In this video, we compare two popular spaced repetition algorithms: absolute spaced repetition system (SRS) algorithm vs. relative spaced repetition algorithm.

An absolute spaced repetition system (SRS) algorithm is a type of algorithm used in software programs like SuperMemo and Anki to schedule review sessions for learned material. In an absolute SRS algorithm, the review intervals are based on the difficulty of the material and, the user's performance, and individual settings & preferences. The intervals between reviews become longer as the material becomes more familiar to the user.

Brainscape, on the other hand, uses a relative spaced repetition algorithm, which adjusts the review intervals based on the user's performance on each individual review session. If the user performs well on a review session, the intervals between subsequent reviews will be longer. If the user struggles during a review session, the intervals will be shorter.

As for which type of spaced repetition algorithm is better, it really depends on your learning style and goals. Some people may find that an absolute SRS algorithm like SuperMemo or Anki works better for them, while others may prefer the flexibility of a relative SRS algorithm like Brainscape.

Ultimately, the best spaced repetition algorithm is the one that works best for you and helps you achieve your learning objectives.
