The A-10 Warthog is a specialized close air support aircraft that has gained a reputation as a highly effective and resilient combat aircraft. By the way, why is the engine located so high? The Warthog's engines are mounted high on the aircraft primarily to protect them from damage caused by debris and foreign objects commonly encountered during low-altitude operations. By positioning the engines above the wing, the A-10 can minimize the risk of ingesting dirt, sand, and other potentially harmful materials that could compromise engine performance or lead to catastrophic failures. Additionally, one of the most serious threats in that environment is man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS). They typically use infrared guidance, or heat seeking. The design of the tail prevents the exhaust from being seen from most rear-quarter aspect angles from the side and below, in addition to creating redundant control surfaces spaced widely apart.
